MP Barry Sheerman was previously undecided on whether to support any legislation in favour of same-sex marriage in Parliament, saying that his constituents felt there was no real need for this further step towards full marriage equality.
Barry contacted the society with a new message: that after further contact with his constituents, he believes government should do all it can to implement laws on an equal basis. He stated that, ‘same-sex couples should not expect to be excluded from any institution recognised by law any more than straight couples should.’
Barry recognises that the three main political parties are committed to redefining marriage, and welcomes further thoughtful discussion on how this can best be achieved.
The LGBT Society would like to thank everyone who has supported our work so far, and pledges to continue to work with Barry and other local MP’s to help make marriage equality a reality in the UK.
